How an Electric Car Works

An electric car stores direct-current energy in a high-voltage battery. Power electronics regulate that energy and feed an electric motor, which turns the wheels through a relatively simple reduction gear. During deceleration, the motor can operate as a generator and return some energy to the battery. An onboard charger handles AC charging, while DC fast charging supplies controlled direct current more directly to the battery system.
